June 14, 2004

it's been a while

I *almost* sliced off the top of a finger on my left hand a couple of months ago. I was chopping leeks, at a respectable rate, when a leek-wheel rolled back towards the knife - jeopardising my rhythm. I, cleverly, moved the knife slightly to the left, to avoid reslicing the leek-wheel. In that same motion, I deftly flicked the intrusive vegetable away with a spare finger and put the knife *almost* all the way through the tip of my ring finger on my left hand. I blanched instantly, I bled at length, and I toyed with a visit to A&E to repair me.

I had, before this mishap, been playing my guitar fervently. Often ferociously too. When I was healing the finger-flap back onto me, I simply couldn't. After a couple of weeks I tried again; I slurred a chord shape up the neck and my B string found its way *into* my scar as I slid along the strings. It hurt, me, a lot and made me a little queasy. In truth, the memory still does make me a little queasy.

I hung my guitar up on the wall and it, and its two colleagues, have languished unloved and untouched for these months.

Time has passed.

To be hygenic about things, I restrung my (acoustic) guitar; this (and my disorganisation) necessitated the use of a set of slinkier (electric) strings with an unwound G string. Everything is very bendy and this, along with my abstinence, seems to have produced a tectonic technique shift and I have become vibrato~man.

I am moderately tempted to spout a little about missing things and not missing things and doing things and sometimes not doing things... but, instead, I'm going to play my guitar.
